5 Tips to Support Healthy Skin

January, 31st 2024

The skin is dynamic and has so many natural processes and mechanisms to stay healthy. Today we are sharing our top 5 esthetician approved tips for a lifetime of healthy skin.

So, how do we ensure we have healthy skin? First, we lean into supporting these processes and mechanisms. Second, we have the mindset that skincare is healthcare. It is a part of our overall wellness plan and it is important to treat it as such. Check out our Healthy Skin Masterclass replay here!

Barrier-First Approach

We want to consistently nourish our skin with the right topical products while avoiding over exfoliation and harsh cleansing. Using barrier-supportive ingredients is necessary for our skin to function naturally. Stripping the skin and then trying to repair it are outdated skincare measures. Instead, we want to nourish our skin and support that lipid barrier!

What is our skin’s lipid barrier, and what is its function?
Our skin barrier helps to guard against external threats such as infectious agents, chemicals, and allergens. Internally, the skin helps to maintain homeostasis and protects from enhanced loss of water from the body. A strong healthy skin barrier is crucial for balanced skin.

Barrier damage can be caused by the natural aging process, using harsh cleansers, applying topical acne medications, or using acids. Further damage can also be caused by aggressive pulling or tugging on the skin, over-exfoliating, and using products containing excessive amounts of fragrance or alcohol.

Some of my favorite barrier supportive products & ingredients include:
  • Brilliant Barrier Water Cream
  • Niacinamide Booster Serum
  • Anti Wrinkle Moisturizer
  • Hyaluronic acid and other humectants that support our Natural Moisture Factor

  • Protection and Prevention

During the day, our skin is naturally in protection and prevention mode. SPF and Vitamin C are a crucial part of your AM routine as these both help to protect our skin in different ways.

UV rays are the number one cause of not only skin cancer but skin aging, too. Wearing sunscreen is one of the best and easiest ways to protect your skin’s appearance at any age. We can have the best skincare routine in the world, but if we are not protecting our skin with SPF, then we will be constantly trying to correct or minimize the visible damage.

Apply an SPF 30 daily in any kind of weather. Sunscreen protects against ultraviolet rays and other environmental exposure that accelerates aging. Remember that 80% of the sun’s rays still penetrate on a cloudy day and most of the damage our skin gets from the sun is incidental. Our Glow Pure Tinted Mineral SPF provides you with the ultimate protection and also moisturizes the skin, leaving you with a youthful, plump appearance.

Vitamin C is another great ingredient that pairs perfectly with your SPF as it helps boost protection during the day. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant and a crucial component to protection and prevention in skincare. Our 30% Vitamin C Dry Oil is formulated with an  oil-soluble form of vitamin C that can penetrate the skin up to 3x more deeply than other forms of vitamin C.

    Repair, Renew, Restore, and Replenish

Lean into your skin's natural processes at night with TARGETED routines. Exfoliators and retinoids are great products to target the look of fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots, uneven skin tone, and more! If you want to maximize your skincare results, try skin cycling. In addition, managing stress and getting a full nights rest may help to improve the look of skin.

    Consistent Cleansing and Moisturizing

An effective routine starts with clean skin and ends with moisturizer. Be consistent, and keep it simple! Consistently doing your essential steps is a much better and more sustainable approach versus inconsistently having a longer routine.

    Remember these important steps:
  • Avoid harsh cleansers that contain SLS, or other harsh surfactants that can strip our skin barrier
  • Try double cleansing (whether with facial oils or makeup remover wipes) to ensure dirt, debris, and other impurities are effectively removed from the skin's surface
  • Apply your favorite moisturizer

  • Throughout the day, your skin attracts dirt, bacteria, allergens, and other environmental stressors like pollution. These accelerate skin aging and amplify UV damage.

To cleanse thoroughly and properly, I like taking my makeup off with our Superfruit Enzymes Cleansing Balm and our Gentle Gel Cleanser to double cleanse.

    Assess and Adjust

We talk about skin cycling a lot here, which is one way to try adjusting to your skin's needs. However, even with skin cycling, we may sometimes need to change the order based on how our skin responds, so paying attention to your skin's needs is essential.

Listening to your skin is important to note with seasonal changes as well. Sometimes our skin may need more barrier support nights, and sometimes an extra night of exfoliation is necessary too. Being mindful of our skincare is a great approach to healthy skin.

  • Take time to rest and chill out. As the holidays approach, schedules get hectic, sweets are all around, and stress makes your skin break out.
  • Make sure to get a good night’s sleep – seven to nine hours – and exercise in the fresh air.
  • Try to get a daily dose of Vitamin D from the sun or supplement with D3 to support healthy bones and skin.
  • Determine your skin type and avoid products that aggravate skin conditions.
